      1st April is celebrated as Utkal Dibasa means Utkal Day. Previousl Odisha was known as Utkal and it is day in which Odisha got a separate province as state. 1st April, 1936 was the day when Odisha formed. So to remember this day we are celebrating this day as Utkal Dibasa.

      Previously our Odisha was not a separate state. He parts were mixed up with other states and Odias were forced to learn that state’s language. In those states ,odia language was not taught to the students. To get freedom from this and for the shake of our mother tongue(odia) the leaders of utkala took promise. The main leaders were Utkala Gouraba Madhusudan Das, Utkala mani Gopabandhu Das, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati, Pandita Nilakantha Das, Fakir Mohan Senapati, Gangadhar Meher, Basudeba Sudhaladeba, Radhanath Ray, Bhubanananda Das, A. P. Patro . After this movement newly Odisha formed with six districts namely Cuttack, Puri, Baleshwar, Sambalpur, Koraput and Ganjam having its capital at Cuttack.

      But now Odisha is having 30 districts and the capital is Bhubaneswar. On this eve the capital of Odisha is decorated as a bride. Very beautifully decorated with colorful lights. This day is celebrated as holiday and we recall the contribution of our freedom fighters.

        Holi is an Indian festival and it is celebrated with colors. This festival is known as Color Festival. This comes once in a year in the end of February or between the middle of March. In Odia this month is known as Falguna. This time is the end of winter season. Everyone enjoy this festival by rubbing colors on each other’s face. Some uses dry color (abira), water gun (pichkari) and balloon filled with color to apply on others. People wishes “Happy holi” to everyone and gives sweets to make the bond sweet. In this day people give color on the feet of elders to get their blessings. 

         In Odisha this is the day of lord Krishna and Radha. This day is called Dola purnami. The icon of love Radha and Krishna worshiped in this day. First people give colors and do worship of Radha and Krishna and after that they play with others with colors. In Dola purnima people place the icon of lord Radha and Krishna in palanquin and visit the area to area. Like this people in odisha celebrate the Holi festival. People offer raw mango to lord for worshiping him.

      There are so many stories behind this festival. One of them is about Hiranyakashyapu’s sister Holika. This day she died so that people celebrate this day as the victory of good on evil. To remember this day people do bonfire in night.
